Subject:Return to the gym, with mixed win and fail
Time:4:20 am.
Mood: tired.
Going back to the gym after not being there regularly for some while (didn't go while sick, went briefly once better, then didn't go during the holidays due to being busy plus reduced holiday hours): good.

Warming up with 5-10 minutes on cardio machine before hitting the weights: also good.

Trying new cardio machine never tried before (crossramp, I think it was called - basically a slanted version of an elliptical trainer, so it's like cross-country skiing uphill, more or less): potentially good.

Discovering that while using machine felt fine at the time, a mere 6.5 minutes on it was enough to make my calf muscles seize up and get crampy and painful within minutes of getting off said machine: NOT good.

Getting to find out which of the weight machines, unbeknownst to you before now, put some degree of stress on your calf muscles in addition to whatever muscle group they're aimed at: educational, I suppose, but would have preferred to find out by some means other than ow-ow-ow-fuck-ow.

Discovering, however, that despite having been away, I could still do the same level of weight on most of the machines as before I got sick: VERY good. I only had to reduce the weight on, I think, two of them, and only by 5 pounds.

New exercise clothes, including, FINALLY, a proper sports bra: doubleplusgood.

Stupid calf muscles still being seriously sore the next day, to the point where going up and down stairs requires determination: really not so good. (Triceps, all shoulder muscles, and pectorals also sore, but only when I move certain ways. Calves are sore even at rest. What the hell is up with that? 6.5 minutes!)

May or may not go to gym again tomorrow, depending how recovered I'm feeling. I have a pretty full day tomorrow anyway. But whenever I do go back, I am feeling a strange urge to get back on the evil calf-killing machine again and see if repeated exposure will allow me to eventually beat it into submission. Possibly, I am insane. But I am fortified with new exercise clothes, which make me feel like I can do anything. Only my calves disagree.

How the hell did it get to be 4am? I could have sworn it was only 2:00 a minute ago. Bed. NOW.

Subject:Glad Game -- Day 6
Time:11:33 pm.
The package of delight arrived this morning!  Inside were copies of the principle O'Reilly books on Regexps.  This means that poetry shall soon be mine again.  Pheeeeer meeee!

Nicky's Girl has read RFC 1149.  OMG!  She's growing up to be a real live geek.  *swoon*

FB convo got me to thinking about the importance of having a special grant from the Crown giving me exclusive license for sales of buttermilk.

Both Number One and Nicky's Girl both scored in the mid 90% on their 4-H project books.  I was amazed.

The jam is done.  The bath salts are done.  The special bath salts are done.  I have concluded that flying monkeys can be invoked upon anyone who doesn't approve and I will have the aid of 5 people who are as annoyed as I am by the whole business.

I am 2/3rds packed for the weekend and may be fully so by noon.

BEM helped me compile g++ on Ourania and then I got MUX with REALMS compiled.  I need to pull Granite, Sandbox, and probably write an installer for the comsys on Friday.

I have two stories that I actually like in the hopper.

In general, we have achieved a happy medium of cheekin organization.  4-5 birds to move in the morning, and then I have the rest to sell.  Want eggs?  We got em!

(I will update again on Monday, I think.)

Behold CheekinHeim. 2'x 4'x 3' high. Now aka Silkiehome. My design and BEM's handiwork. Be amazed at what finally getting the man the damned compressor can do for the world.

Photobucket

The nesting boxes are indeed cat litter buckets. They work great and the cheekins like them. The shelf is a folding locker shelf a la Staples. Shelf is to be replaced with a real shelf and a roost.

Photobucket

The residents. L to R: Sheila BluCheez, Dusty, and Moira. They love the spacious cabinet and cannot so easily kick the bedding out and around the room.

An example of how wet Silkies are nothing but puddles of Surrender.

Found via Craftastrophe:

I take no responsibility for any sanity damage caused by clicking on the above link. Or damage caused to your computer or nasal passages should you happen to be drinking any liquid while clicking (which I do NOT recommend).

But seriously... Yes, it's horrifying, but it's also kind of awesome. If I were the sort of person who (a) had enough disposable income to consider spending $395 on a teapot, and (b) had enough storage space for the epic collection freakish teapots I have always secretly wanted to start, I would so buy it.

ETA: some other entertaining and/or amazing Craftastrophe posts (these are mostly the ones tagged with "Not a craftastrophe but cool enough to rate high"):

Cake Wrecks, or Cake Rex?
Mr. Sandman, Bring Me a Nightmare (this one is really mind-blowing, though you have to scroll down a bit to really get a sense of it)

Rubber gloves and hand creme, while messy, makes a huge difference in these hands.

Topaz seems to be feeling better.  I wuvz my little oversized Sebright and would miss him terribly.

I can, at my leisure, jump on the treadmill tonight.

Kids are fed and BEM assures me that being parental is not my problem after he comes home.

I believe that Cheekinheim will be functionally finished tonight and become Silkiehome.

The Box Truck is cleaned out and ready for a round of chicken dusting and then I start selling off spare pullets.

Cocoa is laying!

So I go out in search of things ordered and things desired, striking out on all fronts.

Scout Shop was closed up tight.  No bookstore had the O'Reilly book on Regular Expressions.  Midway through the process, I get a call from kids, telling me that Topaz is listless and shivering.  Oy.

I tell Number One to do what she thinks best.  No other birds are affected.  Good.

I come home to find Topaz in a shoebox sized tote in Number One's lap, drinking diluted Gatorade and eating corn from her hand.  He is up on the table in the livingroom now, nestled in.  He was cold.  Poor thing.  I expect a full recovery.

Subject:The Glad Game Days 1-3
Time:10:57 pm.
Following the lead of the lovely Ekat, I find things to be glad of and report them here.

Day 1:  I have an awesome dog who is very much mine.  Possibly too big, and definitely enough of a puppy to make 'too big' into 'disaster making', but I will keeps my Seamus.

I am especially glad to have much progress under our belts during BEM's vacation.  Not all we could have done, but not bad.

The Reiki workings have been amazing the last few days.  Just amazing.

Day 2: I had a great day of shopping with Number 1.  Much was acquired that perhaps was not needed, but the day was fun and the load lightened for the outing.

My bees are still having in there, despite the cold.  There is fondant at the ready to push into the hives on the first decent day above 40.

I am happy that Audumla is so very present again in my life.  This is so cool!  The Cow and me got history, and I really did miss her.

Day 3: CheekinHeim is nearly done.  It got two solid coats of sealer and needs the doors applied before carting it to the room where it will house the lovely silkie trio.

It is nearly time to pluck Ymir.  More bunny to spin into lovely yarn for people I adore.

BEM loves me.  Thnk the Gods.

home from doing inventory day at the shop, thus kicking off my accidental seven days in a row working.

I hate it.

Today went smoothly and there were really no major glitches. I have, over the last few years, perfected the art of knowing what to pre-count and how to prep things to make it go as smoothly as possible-and, most importantly, telling my co workers about these things.

as a lovely aside, I had a bottle of Crown Royal and a bottle of Maker's Mark as customer New Years gifts awaiting me when I got to work. Nice, eh?

Must be an omen to flesh out the liquor cabinet, but we were thinking of making that a fun ongoing project this year, anyway.

now, in from the cold and the snow and facing an evening alone, I may make some tea and do some writing.

Or, you know, fall asleep on the couch. whatev.

...I'd just like to say, thanks for 2009 folks. It had its' ups and downs but on the whole, wow! I've had a good year. I hope that those of you that haven't had a great year and even those that have have a better one next time around.

Subject:A collection of wondrous things
Time:4:08 am.
Mood: pleased.
While not entirely without its stresses, this week has mostly been made of awesome, so far. Here are some of the specifics:
  1. Finally got to the Kensington Market Festival of Lights this year, and it was amazing. A really eclectic variety of people from families with kids to punks with pitbulls, and all sorts of creative and entertaining things including mummers, giant animal puppets, Native singers, kids putting on mini-plays, fire-spinning circus folks, a masked raccoon gang, random public art... And I'm still probably missing half of what was there. There were a couple of points where I found myself getting tears in my eyes just because it was so amazing having all these different kinds of people together doing wildly creative things. And it really made me realize just how much, and why, I love this city.

  2. Cookies! )

  3. Aidan! )

  4. Really Good Beer! )

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate it, happy extended solstice or other holiday of your choice to those who don't. Have some cookies.
